Matt and I go back and forth about what is most important, score or swing. If you just want to score, it should be pretty easy to bogie every hole and throw in a few pars for an 88. The problem is we try to par every hole and end up with 5 doubles. For me, I am ok if I shoot 89 with no doubles because I know I managed a bad day of ball striking.

Consistency has been my downfall. I haven’t been able to put together a round where the poorly hit balls, improper course management and a faulty short game were not all absent during the entire round. If I’m driving the ball good my irons stink, if my short game is on, then my putting is off and vice versa.

I’ve always felt really confident with my short game, anything from 125 in I’m pretty reliable. It’s getting to 125 yards that’s been the problem.

I little while back I went over the rounds that I’ve played at this course called Tuscany. I took the best outcome from every hole I’ve played from the 1st to the 18th and the result was a 75. It can be done; I’ve done it, just not in one round! HA!

I think as my mechanics improve the mistakes or errors that I make on the course will get fewer and fewer and the penalties from those mistakes will get less and less.

How in the world are you scoring in the high 90's. Your swing is plenty good enough to shoot in the 80's. I am all for swing perfection, but course management and the short game will shed those unwanted strokes quickly.

One of the drills Dustin has me doing is hinging my wrist at address and taking the club back from that position, that's getting the club on the outside of my hands on the way back vs. on the inside where they've been.

On full swings I've been over exaggerating the steepness of my take back and making a "looping" motion at the top to get the club started down from the inside. I've been starting my hands out away from my body on the downswing and not down like they should be.

I really like the hinge drill, especially when you see it on video. I’ll get the video I have of the drill posted on the YouTube page and let you know when it’s up. It really brings it into perspective of how OTT I was. They seem to be working too, I had a great range session last night, a lot more contact in the center of the clubface then I'm used to seeing!

I had a discussion about that very topic a little over a year ago on the forums over at "The Sand Trap" here's the link:

http://bit.ly/w0Lwr0

It's rare that I play that length of a course, normally I'd say I'm in the 6,500 range. It really depends on the course though. Back in December we played a track that was 6,800 yards but the course was really forgiving, no real dangers off the tee. The course I played a few weeks ago that was 7,000 yards doesn't really play that long, they have some huge downhill holes that makes up for the length.

I don't expect to be playing anymore course at the length anytime soon, but I completely agree with you about the confidence builder. That was one of the reasons I posted that topic at the Sand Trap, I was curious if better golfers thought it was a good idea to play easier courses and shoot better then struggle on more difficult ones. Thanks for the input!!

Have fun at the PGA show!!

While I am not totally onboard with the tee if forward idea, if you are really playing 6900 yards with a 20 handi, you might want to try stepping up to 6000 yards to get the feeling of shooting in the low 90's or even in the 80's.

Making a string of pars really helps with the confidence and will translate to playing longer tracks but there is something to be said for going low (even at an easy track). It is kind of like making 20 two foot putts before you play-get the feeling of winning in your system.

Super post! I think most of us have been there. You've got to keep in mind that the old swing, in the long run, was not going to help your improvement. Change, as we know is difficult - and there will be some rough rides - but stick at it and you'll reap the rewards. Always look at the long term - keep going! You've definitely got the right attitude.

I couldn't agree more with your last statement.

I'm fine with putting up a bad score as long as what I've been working on is showing some potential improvement and is giving me the hope that I can turn this into something good, and it did!

I'd be more mad at myself if I would have walked away from this round and not learned anything at all! So glad that didn't happen.
